If you weren’t planning to buy a Pro — or a rumored foldable that costs like a laptop — September’s iPhone story may feel like it skipped you.

That reaction is reasonable. It is also, for now, based on reporting and rumor, not on a confirmed Apple product sheet for a base iPhone 18. This post frames the expected split launch clearly, then talks through what non-Pro buyers actually do. If you’re not buying a Pro

Assuming the rumor holds, your realistic paths look like this:

1. Keep what you have

If your current phone is fine, a missing base 18 is not an emergency. Software still moves — iOS 27 confirmed vs rumored — and many people were upgrading for the calendar, not for pain.

2. Buy last year’s standard phone (new or used)

BGR has argued the iPhone 17 aged into a strong “standard” device in a year without a direct replacement on the fall stage (source). Whether Apple discounts it, holds price, or raises it is industry speculation until Apple’s store page updates. Don’t treat rumor price direction as fact.

3. Wait for spring 2027

If you specifically want the next non-Pro slab (or the rumored 18e / Air 2), waiting means months, not weeks. Plan around that honestly. Don’t keep a sellable phone in limbo “until the cheap 18 drops” without checking what the used market does in the meantime.

4. Buy used / refurbished now

A healthy used iPhone 15 / 16 / 17 can be the practical answer when Apple’s fall stage is Pro-skewed. Condition still rules. Cracked is sellable on our side: should you sell a cracked iPhone.

A Pro-heavy fall still moves last-gen Pros into trade-in and buyback channels. A delayed base model may delay some of the usual “I traded my regular phone for the new regular phone” supply until spring — if the rumor is right.
