Your Phone’s Best Resale Week Is Usually the One Before the Keynote

Apple’s September event gets the headlines. The used market gets the hangover.

If you only remember one timing rule, make it this: the week before the keynote is usually kinder to sellers than the stretch between announcement and the day new phones ship. That is a pattern from industry trade-in data and reporting — not a guarantee for every model, and not a CMYP price chart.

What the recent data says

SellCell tracked trade-in values across the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 launch cycles. Coverage from PhoneArena and MacRumors summarizes the headline findings:

  • Across those three launches, 75% of tracked iPhone configurations lost trade-in value between Apple’s announcement and release day.
  • In the most recent (iPhone 17) cycle, 92.6% of tracked models dropped in that roughly ten-day window.
  • Individual models in the dataset saw declines described in those writeups — including percentage drops that reached about 20% on a worst-case tracked unit. Treat those as historical trade-in dataset results, not a forecast for your phone this week.

BGR’s upgrade-timing pieces ahead of this cycle make the same practical point from the buyer side: waiting for a new lineup can leave you holding a phone while trade-in estimates move against you (BGR skip/wait, BGR event context).

None of that is a CMYP offer. It is why “I’ll sell after I unbox the new one” keeps showing up as an expensive habit in other people’s data.

Why the pre-keynote week tends to win

Before the event:

  • Upgrade intent is high, but the flood of freshly freed phones hasn’t fully arrived
  • People who already decided to sell are still shopping quotes without competing against next week’s surplus
  • You’re not stuck transferring data on a Friday night and then discovering the offer moved

After the keynote, two clocks start:

  1. Perception clock — your model is suddenly “last gen” in every headline
  2. Supply clock — pre-orders and ship dates pull more of the same phones into buyback channels

This year’s calendar (confirmed vs rumored)

Confirmed: Apple’s Surprise and shine event is Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. MT.

Rumored: Pros and a foldable this fall; base iPhone 18 / 18e / Air 2 in spring 2027 (MacRumors guide). Pre-order chatter has clustered around Saturday, September 12, with a possible Friday, September 18 store date — still rumor until Apple confirms.

If you are reading this on or after September 12, the “week before” may already be behind you. The next-best move is still earlier rather than “after I set up the new phone and live with it for a month.”

What this is not

  • Not advice to take a bad carrier promo just because the calendar says September. Promo math is its own problem — again: carrier trade-in promotions 2026.
  • Not a claim that every phone peaks on the Monday before the keynote. Batteries die, locks appear, markets hiccup.
  • Not a reason to factory-reset in a panic. Sell timing does not override Activation Lock. Do Find My the right way: remove iCloud / Find My.
