Carrier Trade-In Promotions in 2026: Fine Print by Carrier (After Launch Week)

This is the 2026 remake of our classic: The truth about carrier trade-in promotions (May 2026). The commercials still shout a big “up to” number. The structure is still monthly bill credits on a leash.

What this post does differently: after Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Apple (and any other relevant) publish real launch-week trade-in / promo terms, we go through each promotion with a fine-tooth comb — pros, cons, and fine print — with links. Until those terms are live, carrier sections stay as TBD scaffolds. We will not invent 2026 promo dollar amounts.

We buy phones for cash in Salt Lake County. Spoiler for the ending: for most people, the cleanest path is still private sale or sell to Cell Me Your Phone, then buy the new phone unlocked if you can.

The structure that never makes the commercial

Same bones as the classic guide:

  1. Headline promo value ≠ cash market value. Carriers separate “promo” credit from what your phone is worth as a standalone trade-in. Verizon’s own terms distinguish market value from promo value tied to a new-device promotion (Verizon Device Trade-in Program terms).
  2. Savings usually arrive as monthly promo / device credits, not money you pocket at checkout. Credits can take a bill cycle or two to show, and stop if you fall out of eligibility (Verizon device deals FAQs).
  3. Paying the device off early can kill remaining credits while you may still have owed nothing left — or owe a payoff if you leave mid-term (Verizon device payment FAQs; T-Mobile promotional trade-in).
  4. Qualifying plan lock. Credits usually require a specific (often higher) unlimited tier for the full credit term.
  5. Carrier lock. Financed promo phones are typically locked until that carrier’s unlock rules (often including payoff + a wait) are met — which shrinks your later resale pool. Related: locked vs unlocked and how we price.

Read those five before you stare at any billboard.

Checklist we run on every launch-week promo

When real terms drop, each carrier section below gets filled using this comb (sourced to the carrier’s own offer page / footnotes):

  • Headline total vs how it’s paid (monthly credits? how many months?)
  • Required plan tier and price vs a plan you’d actually want
  • What happens on early payoff
  • What happens if you switch lines / carriers / cancel
  • Trade-in condition rules (cracks, battery, account locks)
  • Unlock timing
  • Standalone trade-in value vs promo value (if the tool shows both)
  • Any “loyalty / invite-only / port-in” gates

Pros / cons tables go in each section only after those links exist. No guessed dollar tables.

Other promos (only if relevant)

If Visible, US Mobile, Best Buy carrier desk, or a prepaid “upgrade” offer shows up with real published terms in this window, add a short sourced subsection here. Otherwise leave blank — we don’t invent competitors’ deals.

Bottom line (this part is not TBD)

Billboard numbers are designed to win the scroll. The fine print wins the next three years.

For most people emptying a Salt Lake drawer this fall:

  1. Don’t treat a promotional credit as cash.
  2. Sell the old phone for real money — private party if you want max hassle/max price, or get a quote from us and meet locally (Fashion Place Mall or Maverik in Bluffdale) when the offer works.
  3. Buy the new phone unlocked when you can (Apple / Samsung / Google store paths), so you’re not married to one carrier’s credit schedule.

We buy cracked, carrier-locked, and mixed junk-drawer piles when they check out. We do not need you on a 36-month promo leash. We will not post a public “we pay $X” number — send the details and we’ll send a private offer.
