The Base iPhone 18 Isn’t Coming This Fall. Waiting Until Spring Is a Long Wait.

If your upgrade plan is “I’ll wait for the regular iPhone 18,” check the calendar against what the rumor mill is actually saying.

Apple’s confirmed event is Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific — 11 a.m. Mountain — under the tagline Surprise and shine. That part is from Apple. What is rumored, not confirmed, is a split launch: Pro models and a foldable this fall, and the base iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and next Air held until spring 2027.

That is not a two-week delay. That is months.

Confirmed vs rumored

Confirmed: Apple scheduled the September 9 keynote and will stream it. MacRumors and BGR both report the same date and time Apple published.

Rumored (label everything below as rumor until Apple says it on stage):

Fall stage: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first book-style foldable (often called iPhone Ultra in coverage). MacRumors’ September guide is explicit that the standard iPhone 18 is not expected in September.
Spring 2027: base iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2. BGR’s “skip the 18” piece frames that as early 2027; MacRumors says spring 2027. BGR’s iPhone 17 aging piece even floats a March-style window for the base phone — still a rumor, not a ship date.
Watch and software: Apple Watch Series 12 / Ultra 4 and iOS 27 release timing are expected talking points, not guarantees until Apple confirms them.

One note on sources: BGR’s event roundup has a confusing “early September” slip in one sentence about the base models. Their own skip/wait article and MacRumors both point at 2027. We are sticking with spring 2027 as the rumor consensus until Apple corrects it live.

Why a split launch changes the waiting math

In a normal year, waiting for “the new base iPhone” meant waiting through September. This year, if the rumor holds, waiting means sitting through the Pro launch, the foldable hype cycle, the holidays, and into next spring.

That matters if you were hoping for:

A cheaper new slab phone from Apple this fall
A clean last-gen price cut on the iPhone 17 once its direct replacement arrives
Carrier promos that usually pair with a full four-model refresh

BGR and others have also floated that Apple may not discount the iPhone 17 the way it usually discounts a replaced base model — and that some manufacturing-cost pressure could even push prices the other way. Treat those price-direction takes as rumored industry analysis, not facts. Nobody outside Apple has the final MSRP sheet yet.

What this means if you’re not buying a Pro

If you want the foldable or a new Pro, September is still your week — with the usual caveats that foldable supply may be tight and release timing for that device is still rumor territory (MacRumors has discussed announcement-now, availability-later patterns).

If you want a regular new iPhone and the rumor is right, you are choosing between:

Buy or keep an iPhone 17 (BGR has argued it aged well and may still be the practical “standard” phone for longer than usual — source)
Wait until spring 2027 for the rumored base 18 / 18e / Air 2 group
Buy used or refurbished now and stop treating fall as the only decision window
