5 Things to Do Before Selling Your Phone (Protect Your Data!)

January 24, 2026·By Cell Me Your Phone Team
Checklist of 5 essential steps to take before selling your used phone, including backing up data and factory resetting.

5 Things to Do Before Selling Your Phone (Protect Your Data!)

Selling your old phone is a great way to put some cash in your pocket while giving your device a second life. But before you hand it over to a buyer, there are some critical steps you need to take to protect your personal information and ensure a smooth transaction.

We've helped thousands of Utah residents sell their phones, and we've seen firsthand what happens when people skip these steps. Don't let that be you! Here's your complete pre-sale checklist.

1. Back Up Everything

Your phone is a treasure trove of memories and important information. Before you do anything else, make sure everything is safely backed up.

For iPhone Users:

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup
  • Tap Back Up Now
  • Wait for the backup to complete (this might take a while on a slow connection)
  • Alternatively, connect to iTunes/Finder on your computer for a local backup

For Android Users:

  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Google > Account Sync
  • Ensure all toggles are on for contacts, calendar, photos, etc.
  • For photos: Use Google Photos with backup enabled
  • For Samsung users: Also check Samsung Cloud settings

Pro Tip: Verify your backup worked by checking iCloud.com or Google Drive before proceeding to the next steps.

2. Sign Out of All Accounts

This is where many people make mistakes. Simply doing a factory reset isn't enough—you need to manually sign out of your accounts first.

Critical Accounts to Sign Out Of:

iCloud / Apple ID (iPhone):

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name]
  • Scroll down and tap Sign Out
  • Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
  • This removes Activation Lock, allowing the new owner to set up the phone

Google Account (Android):

  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Google
  • Select your account and tap Remove Account

Other Important Apps:

  • Banking and payment apps (Venmo, PayPal, Cash App)
  • Social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok)
  • Email apps
  • Authenticator apps (transfer these first!)

Warning: If you skip signing out of iCloud on an iPhone, the new owner won't be able to activate the device. This is the #1 issue we see with trade-ins!

3. Disable Find My iPhone / Find My Device

This step is crucial and often overlooked. These security features, while great for preventing theft, will brick the phone for the new owner if not disabled.

For iPhone:

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Find My
  • Tap Find My iPhone and turn it OFF
  • Enter your Apple ID password to confirm

For Android:

  • Go to Settings > Security > Find My Device
  • Turn the toggle OFF

For Samsung:

  • Also disable Samsung Find My Mobile in Settings > Biometrics and Security

4. Remove Your SIM Card and SD Card

Don't forget about the physical items in your phone!

SIM Card:

  • Your SIM card contains your phone number and carrier info
  • Use a SIM ejector tool (or a paperclip) to pop out the tray
  • Keep your SIM for your new phone or return it to your carrier

SD Card (Android):

  • Check if you have an SD card inserted
  • Back up any files on it before removing
  • This is YOUR storage—don't leave it behind!

Note: If you have an eSIM, make sure to contact your carrier about transferring it to your new device before selling.

5. Factory Reset Your Phone

Now that everything is backed up, signed out, and removed, it's time for the final step: wiping the phone clean.

For iPhone:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  • Confirm and wait for the process to complete
  • The phone will restart to the "Hello" setup screen

For Android:

  • Go to Settings > System > Reset Options
  • Tap Erase All Data (Factory Reset)
  • Confirm and wait for the wipe to complete

For Samsung:

  • Go to Settings > General Management > Reset
  • Tap Factory Data Reset and confirm

Bonus: Clean Your Phone Physically

First impressions matter! Give your phone a quick clean before selling:

  • Wipe down the screen with a microfiber cloth
  • Clean the charging port with compressed air
  • Remove any case or screen protector (unless including them)
  • Make sure the phone is charged (at least 50%)
